Most of our clients have parked their Tiny Houses on land owned by family or friends. They rent an area on the property and share utilities. We agree with our clients that the way to find land for your Tiny House is to get clear about what you’d like, reach out and have conversations and be ready to be flexible.
In this blog post we will tell you how Fatima and Croyden Wheeler managed to find land for rent to park their tiny house while it was being built by Aussie Tiny Houses.
Getting creative to find land to park a tiny house
Fatima and Croyden Wheeler had “a hustle and bustle city lifestyle” before moving to a simpler way of life, surrounded by nature in Queensland’s Gold Coast hinterland. The Wheelers found a creative way to get word out that they wanted a place to park their new home. They designed an appealing flyer and delivered it to 25 homes in the area they really desired. One call back, a face to face meeting and the place was theirs!
How did they do it? While their Tiny House was being built Fatima and Croyden designed an A4 coloured flyer that included:
- An introduction to their family with a photo
- Pictures of what their house would look like once it was built
- Their contact details
Anticipating the land owners point of view
Before they spoke with their potential landlord, the Wheelers were prepared to help him say ‘Yes’ with:
- An explanation of how they’d manage water and power supply and waste removal
- The regulations around Tiny Houses
- Their budgeted rent figure
It’s a thousand times better than what we ever thought we would get.
Fatima Wheeler
Fatima shares how Croydens idea to print flyers and the couple’s positivity was key.
“We made up some flyers and dropped 25 into mailboxes in the Tallebudgera and Currumbin Valley area. Out of 25 only one person called us back. We went to meet the landowner and instantly connected. We loved the property – it’s private, there is so much land and on top of that there is a small studio and toilet block on either side of where we will put our tiny home which helps with utilities and waste removal. We manifested it, took action and waited … then BOOM !!! this perfect property we’ll be leasing within our budget came from nowhere!! We are truly grateful and it’s a thousand times better than what we ever thought we would get. The landowner is AMAZING! So welcoming , friendly and it’s like we already know him!!
If you have a dream to do the whole tiny home living YOU CAN DO IT! From the time we stepped foot and checked out a display model at Aussie Tiny Houses up in the Sunny Coast to the time we paid our deposit and secured our land was only 4 weeks! Anything is POSSIBLE.”

4 years agoGreat advice as a starting step. Right now though, I reckon that it’s time for Government and Councils to step and up take the TH movement seriously as an alternative to the soaring prices of current real estate that have become the norm (and totally out of my budget). I reckon there are going to have to be compromises on both sides for this to work. I’m willing to buy land, put a concrete pad down, connect to utilities and pay my rates. All I’m asking is please don’t judge me for wanting to live in a TH by the Government and Councils. It’s time and it’s needed!

3 years agoAs a land owner in NSW Crookwell area, I would love to rent space with tiny home owners having freedom of having horses and your own business. Would love to have 2 or 3 tiny homes on property. I will provide water tanks with share gardens but you have your own area.

My wife and I are looking for land to rent for the placement of a Tiny Home.
We want to move closer to the ACT as my wife’s son (also from Sydney) his wife (from Canberra) and our only granddaughter (she is 1) live there. As we are both older we want to spend as much time with children and grandchildren as possible. We are currently staying in motels in Yass as a base to travel to Taylor ACT. Saw your comments regarding your wish to rent space for a tiny home. Could you please call me so we can introduce ourselves and discuss possibilities.
Best wishes
Glen
