Tiny house living is appealing for many reasons. Compared with standard homes, they’re cheaper, more sustainable and offer more freedom. But, as in their name, tiny houses are very small. This means some creative solutions are needed to ensure they’re not only liveable, but comfortable. We’ve built a lot of tiny houses and have included effective storage solutions in all of them. Read on for some of our favourite tiny house storage solutions!
Storage furniture
Without a doubt, the most practical and well-known storage hack is the use of cabinetry and furniture with in-built storage. One common in tiny houses are storage couches, which either have drawers that pull out underneath or a lid that opens into a chest. This chest storage can be particularly good for the larger, awkward shaped items that might get in the way anywhere else. If your tiny house has a ground floor bedroom, a storage bed is also a great option. Depending on your space, drawers can either pull out to the sides or from the foot of the bed and offer a surprising amount of extra storage. It’s perfect for your spare linen, off-season clothes, or the miscellaneous items with nowhere else to go.
Storage in the stairs
You’re unlikely to find a loft style tiny house without storage in the stairs; it’s versatile, easily accessible and means you don’t have to climb a ladder to access the loft. Depending on your home’s design, they can include drawers, open shelves, cupboards, hanging space or even an open space to fit a full-sized fridge.
All our loft bedroom models have some form of stair storage, so you can choose the style that you like best!
Make use of blank surfaces
With the addition of a few carefully placed magnets or bars, storage can be implemented almost anywhere. Install magnetic sheeting on walls or the underside of shelves and you can hang spice jars or knives where they’ll be easily accessible. Attaching pocket storage or bars to the inside of cupboard doors provide a great space to store chopping boards or hang awkwardly shaped items like pot lids. And don’t forget about the top of your cupboards as well. You won’t want to store everyday items here, but it does offer a lot of space to store things like important documents or memorabilia that you only need once in a while.
Specialised storage
When designing a tiny house, there’s no room for wasted space. A common example is that of the toe-kick in the kitchen. Sure, they’re not usually drawers but the extra space can make a big difference in a tiny house. Turn them into drawers with a soft padding underneath (so they don’t scratch your floors) and you’ve got yourself a surprising amount of extra storage for smaller items like baking trays, or even a feeding station for your pet.
For vertical storage, pull-out racks are a great choice as they can be much thinner than standard cupboards and stored items are more easily accessible. Whether they store your condiments in the kitchen, or toiletries in the bathroom, they’re a must in a tiny house.
Modular furniture
It can be hard to design a small space to suit many different uses, but with modular furniture a room can be transformed with a few, simple adjustments. If you need a desk to work at, a hinged table that can lie flat against a wall when not in use will ensure the room remains spacious. Extend the kitchen counter to fit a seating area which can act as a dining table, office desk or just extra prep area when you need it. Sofa beds can be used for optional extra sleeping spaces, or, for even more versatility, use cushioned storage boxes. They can be rearranged into lots of individual seats or even another bed, all while providing some good storage space as well.
Our Coolum 6.0 design includes a daybed space which converts into a single or king-sized bed, with additional storage underneath.
Hanging storage
Bring out the farmhouse chic with hanging storage. By installing hooks or a bar into a wall you can hang pots and pans, utensils, or tea towels where they’re easily accessible. Hanging baskets can store fruit and create a pop of colour. And who doesn’t love hanging plants? They can help add much-needed greenery without using up bench or floor space.
Organisation is key
To make the best use of each and every space, ensuring they’re organised efficiently is key to keeping your home uncluttered and functional. Clear, labelled containers and draw separators are lifesavers, making it much easier to find anything you need. For loose items, baskets are a nice way to hide them away where they’re still easily accessible. As you pack each space, consider what items you use every day and ensure they’re in easy to reach locations.
Tiny house living is all about reducing the stress in your life but, when cluttered, tiny spaces can quickly feel overwhelming. Implementing these tiny house storage solutions will help ensure that doesn’t happen, and instead of spending all your time cleaning, you can get back to your tiny living dream as stress free as possible.
