An oven is a fitting, a range hood is a fixture and the kitchen benchtop is a finish! With so many options for personalising a Tiny House, it can become overwhelming. The Design team at ATH is committed to helping you feel confident not only in your design but also in your Tiny House custom finishes and fitting choices. We aim towards a smooth running project and ensure you enjoy the experience of building your own home.
Listen below as ATH’s Jessica Love, Honours level Designer (Interior Architecture) shares her tips and explains the easiest way to approach your Tiny House project. Jess received an Australian Design Institute award in 2020 and is ready to collaborate with you on your dream build.
What you’ll get from tuning in:
- When is the right time to choose your customisation alternatives from the range of options.
- What are fixtures, fittings, finishes and hardware?
- Tip to align your bench top with your floor.
- Why a neutral palette is ideal and the benefits of leaving one wall blank.
- Discover warm and cool lighting options that match the pitch of the roof.
- NEW Clever kitchen design tips.

My favourite part of the design process is sitting down with clients and providing them with the options they may not have considered yet.

After the contracts are signed and the build completion date is confirmed, handover to the Design team happens and the fun begins! Jess and the team will communicate with you throughout the design stage.
You’ll receive:
1. A set of drawings including:
- Floor Plan(s)
- External Elevations
- Internal Sections
- 3D Views
- Electrical and Joinery
2. Drawing checklist:
- Our clients who live remotely find this very helpful in interpreting their design.
3. Fittings & Fixture options.
Jess will confirm the main design features with you and optimise functionality of the space to meet your needs. Some clients know and choose their finishes early on in stage 3 of the 8 step home buying process, especially if they’re visiting the showroom in person. The final decision happens in stage 7 when the Design team is there to finalize the colour scheme, create a mood board and match everything to your aesthetic style.
The most popular styles with clients at the moment are:
- Deep, rich, chocolate tones to create a cosy cottage atmosphere.
- Light, bright, coastal shades for a fresh, open feel.
You’ll be shown all the options for fittings, fixtures and finishes. There are black sinks or white sinks and Jess advises that “colour schemes are very important in small spaces.” She suggests that “the idea is to trick the eye into thinking that there is more room than there really is and to achieve this, I recommend colour matching your choice of flooring with your benchtops and stair treads, leaving walls and cabinetry as neutral as possible.” It’s the way to leave a lot more flexibility when it comes to introducing your own finishing touches when you receive your home.
