What is a Tiny House?

What is a Tiny House

While there are so many different definitions and products on the market, many people still don’t understand what a tiny house is all about. In summary, a tiny house is a cabin-like home built on wheels for simpler, eco-friendly, financially sustainable living, but there are many people who haven’t yet heard about the beautiful small homes and every now and then you will get the question: “What is a Tiny House?”

There is no limit to the scope of Tiny House design – you just have to search the internet to discover the possibilities. Tiny Houses provide a sustainable way to build communities, can generate rental income or give more people affordability to own their own home.

‘Tiny House’ definition

The general understanding is that a Tiny House is a 7.2m x 2.4m fully equipped home on wheels and contains a kitchen, living area, bathroom and sleeping loft.

With clever small space design and access to off grid technology, Tiny Houses are easy to live in and perfect for full time living, AirBnB rentals, a granny flat, studio or office. Individual design will match the lifestyle you want.

Why are Tiny Houses built on wheels?

Most Tiny Houses in Australia are built on wheels, so the rules that apply to caravans also apply to tiny homes. By building your home on wheels you can overcome many of the regulatory hurdles that go along with a fixed dwelling on a concrete slab or stumps.

However, there is no broad statement about what’s allowed as the rules around living in caravans on private property often exist at a local council level.

Most Tiny House owners like the fact that they can change location if they want to. Although Tiny Houses aren’t built for regular towing like a caravan, separating the house from the land,  does mean flexibility, cost efficiency and a smaller footprint for eco-friendly living.

Why people live in Tiny Houses

One of the most common reasons for switching to Tiny House living is the relief from financial pressure. The Tiny House movement is growing! The appeal comes from:

  • Being able to afford a home of your own without having to own the land it sits on.
  • Being free from mortgage or rent debt – a Tiny House loan can be paid off in 4 to 5 years and land rental is commonly around $95 per week.
  • Reduced utility bills – small spaces are cheaper to heat and cool and off the grid options are readily available.
  • A simpler, more natural lifestyle that focuses on relationships and takes the pressure off the need to work more.
  • Location options – park your Tiny House close to your workplace for easier commuting or work from home wherever you are.
  • Our Tiny Houses are beautifully designed with a clever use of space. Imagine how much time you’d save on cleaning and maintenance!

How much do Tiny Houses cost?

The cost of designing and building a Tiny House depends on the size, materials used and upgrades, such as a composting toilet. As an average figure, $89900 will get you a 7.2m Aussie Tiny House for two to live comfortably. As a bonus, the reduction in ongoing living expenses means more savings for holidays and retirement.
